Baby Quail!

Yayyy!! Success!! My little quail hen has finally done it!! She hatched two babies all by herself! 😀 I am so pleased! It is very rare for coturnix quail to brood, but mine did it last year (see my post The Happy Quail Project). I was so curious to see whether they would brood and hatch babies again this year. And they did! Resulting in this adorable video, which I think might even top the guinea pig video in terms of cuteness:

It took a few tries, but I’m amazed to see this little hen never gave up! The others bothered her a lot, the males kept chasing her out and trying to mate with her, and the other females kept laying extra eggs in her nest. Until I put a small cage over her, so she could brood in peace. And succeeded in her mission! 💙

I’m going to try to mark this quail hen (maybe a leg band?) and her chicks, to see if her chicks will also brood next year. Interesting micro-project! 🙂
